Thailand is one of the world's most visited destinations, and with good reason. The land of smiles boasts everything from beautiful islands and beaches to stunning mountain scenery and intriguing cities full of history and culture. The people are friendly, the climate is kind and the culture is gentle and welcoming. It's no surprise that through the years, Thailand has continued to draw millions of visitors from around the globe year after year, making it one of the most sophisticated international destinations on the planet.
In Bangkok, the Grand Palace is on of Thailand's most ornate and spectacular buildings, featuring gold painted temples and bejewelled shrines while or a more down to earth experience, Chatuchak weekend market offers an insight into the local culture, village lifestyle and handicraft products available throughout the country. The choice of shopping malls, markets and retail streets is endless. Popular centres for big name stores include Siam Square and Sukhumvit Road and the choices are so extensive that most shops stay open late into the night. Local life is also a cultural attraction in Bangkok and one of the best ways to catch a glimpse is to take a boat through the Thonburi canals.
Beyond the capital, Thailand's northern provinces offer a whole new experience. Chiang Mai is one of the country's most interesting cities and its ancient "Lanna" culture has inspired distinctive cultural forms such as art and dance. The city is also graced with around 300 beautiful Buddhist temples and the famous, sprawling Night Bazaar in Chaing Mai attracts shoppers from all over the world in search of a bargain.
Further into the hills, Thailand's ethnic tribal communities offer visitors a glimpse of another world. Small rural villages are dotted throughout the mountains and people live as they have done for centuries. The northeastern provinces are similarly agricultural, with ancient monuments and statues hidden in the rolling countryside and friendly people that welcome foreigners into their communities. Historic sites like Wat Prasat Phanom provide a stunning insight into the region's past, while traditional culture and healing arts such as Thai massage techniques keep the spirit of ancient Thailand alive. Outside the cities, beautiful national parks offer some of the most stunning scenery to be seen anywhere in Asia.
The Southern Thailand is so distinct from the north that it almost feels like another country. Pattaya has developed into a major tourist destination in recent years with fine beaches and a whole host of attractions that include golf, horse riding, water sports and even flying. A little further down the coast, Hua Hin is Thailand's Royal vacation spot and also offers some top class amenities and diversions, while on the Andaman coast, Krabi is famous for its limestone pinnacles and fabulous clear waters.
When it comes to islands, Thailand is also in a league of its own. Phuket boasts world class hotels and luxurious villas, a vibrant nightlife scene, fabulous shopping opportunities, as well as sailing, diving, golf and fine beaches. Meanwhile, over on the Thai Gulf, Koh Samui and its sister islands Koh Phangan and Koh Tao offer a more laid back beach vibe, but also with every possible amenity, as well as a fabulous choice of private accommodation in villas, apartments and hotels. Koh Phangan's famous Full Moon Party attracts thousands of revellers every month, while Samui's many spas provide the perfect opportunity for a healthy retreat.
