Spa and Wellness in Thailand
Not so long ago people had hardly ever heard the term "spa" and even fewer had enjoyed the experience. But thanks to its traditional practices and natural healing arts such as ancient Thai massage, Thailand was one of the first countries to embrace spa culture and to meet demand. Literally hundreds of spas have opened around the country in the past few years, both within the larger hotels, as well stand alone facilities in dramatic tropical settings.
There are endless choices of treatment, therapy and special courses on offer in Thai spas, with varying levels of luxury, price and value. Thailand's natural abundance, it's fresh water springs and rich medicinal flora, coupled with a strong reputation for hospitality and service guarantee the most relaxing and effective spa treatments available.
Chiva-Som in Hua Hin is perhaps the most famous destination spa in Thailand and has attracted a number of celebrity guests over the years. Another famous retreat is The Six Senses Destination Spa Phuket, an all-inclusive resort located on the private island of Naka Yai just off Phuket.
Respected spas within Thailand's top end hotels include those at The Oriental, Peninsula and Sheraton Grande, while in Phuket there's the famous Amanpuri Resort, as well as Banyan Tree Phuket and The Evason. On Koh Samui the Cenvaree Spa at Centara Grand Beach Resort is a popular option, as is the spectacular design at The Anantara Resort. In Pattaya, Central Wong Amat Beach Resort and Royal Cliff Beach Resort boast fine spa facilities, while in Chiang Mai, The Regent Resort is known for its Lanna Spa.
Thailand also offers a choice of high quality day spas. S Medical Spa is a comprehensive holistic facility supervised by a team of highly qualified doctors, located in the bustling business district of central Bangkok. Then there's Sukko Cultural Spa & Wellness on Phuket, a modern facility, but with Thai treatments and designs. On Koh Samui, Tamarind Springs is an incredible forest spa with two cave steam rooms and quality massage therapies in a spectacular natural setting. In Chiang Mai, Ban Sabai Spa offers a quiet retreat with stylish treatment facilities and a convenient downtown location.
As well as spa treatments, Thailand also offers full scale health programmes for those in need of a complete detox. The Sanctuary on Koh Phangan and The Spa on Koh Samui both offer fasting and cleansing programmes with fully trained therapists, modern techniques equipment set in beautiful surroundings.
